Methane Removal Summit and Workshop

Co-hosted with the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability | January 21-22, 2025 | Stanford, CA

In January 2025, Spark Climate Solutions and Stanford Sustainability Accelerator convened over 80 leading natural scientists, social scientists, policymakers, legal scholars, and market innovators for a landmark two-day methane removal workshop on Stanford’s campus. This workshop was the largest convening to date on methane removal.

Why did we organize this workshop?

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine recently released a report calling for researchers to explore potential strategies for removing methane from the atmosphere as one possible tool to combat climate change.

Building on the National Academies’ report, we brought together experts to catalyze the interdisciplinary collaborations needed to translate high-level strategy to action—laying the groundwork for comprehensive assessments of safety, effectiveness, scalability, and social acceptance across different methane removal approaches.

What did we learn?

Across seven focus areas, experts discussed how to address priority research questions through panel discussions and breakout sessions. Each session offered in-depth technical insights and practitioner perspectives.
